Buon ascolto 2016

Schermata 2015-12-02 alle 14.35.59

The goals pursued by Divertimento Ensemble have given rise over the years to numerous projects, many of which are still ongoing, aimed at sustaining the creativity of young musicians from Italy, Europe as well as outside Europe; a support offered primarily to composers but also to orchestral performers and conductors in three fundamental forms: talent scouting, training and support during the first steps in professional activities.

The Rondò music programme of this year is likewise built on these premises: an international composition competition (the “Franco Donatoni” International Meeting for Young Composers), an Orchestral conducting course for the repertoire from the early 1900s to today, a masterclass comprised of seven sessions dedicated to young pianists (Call for Young Performers), an international composition workshop (International Workshop for Young Composers) and the Composer in residence.

The 2016 season furthermore inaugurates a new project On the Stage! (Sul Palco!): aimed at groups of artists who have produced or staged musical shows that integrate differing languages and technologies and with high innovative content.

In almost every concert of this season, young composers are paired with figures who have left imprints of fundamental importance in the story of music of the last fifty years: Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, György Kurtág, Franco Donatoni, Iannis Xenakis, Sofia Gubajdulina and Salvatore Sciarrino.

But above all, the entire Rondò season will be accompanied by Niccolò Castiglioni: to whom, in the twentieth anniversary from his death, we dedicate five concerts at the Museo del Novecento performing a good part of his chamber music works.

The first evening concert (26 January) is dedicated to a new project of Daniele Ghisi, our resident composer in 2015: An Experiment With Time (reloaded), for ensemble, video and electronics, which has been co-produced with Ircan Centre Pompidou with the support of the European Ulysses network.

Three concerts will present a selection of works linked to three projects of Divertimento Ensemble: Feeding Music, produced by the Italian Pavilion on the occasion of the 2015 Expo (5 February), the “Franco Donatoni” International Meeting for Young Composers (20 April) and International Workshop for Young Composers (9 May).

Maria Grazia Bellocchio’s Call for Young Performers, aimed at young pianists who wish to familiarise themselves with the contemporary repertoire, is dedicated this year to Italian piano works of the last 40 years and will conclude with two concerts, an afternoon concert and an evening concert, preceded by a round table on contemporary music participated by the composers involved in the project (22 May). The concerts shall be repeated in Novara, Piacenza and Trieste.

The last concert in Milan of the Orchestral conducting course for the repertoire from the early 1900s to today (14 September) will be dedicated this year to four composers who have had a great influence on more recent music production language: Tristan Murail, Gérard Grisey, Beat Furrer and Mauro Lanza; the same programme will be performed in various concerts in Monferrato where the course is being held; on stage will be the best students of the course.

Another new event for 2016 Rondò is a six lessons series on the relationship between the music of today and its origins that will be held by Alessandro Solbiati and Alfonso Alberti at six bookshops in Milan. This series of lessons are being entitled Take Your Time, and we hope that those of you who wish to deepen your knowledge in the music of today will take up our invitation to the lessons that will cover not only Castiglioni, Kurtág, Donatoni, Grisey, Ligeti and Maderna, but also Ravel, Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin and Bartók.

Our 2016 season includes 19 debut performances of Daniele Ghisi, Miguel Farías, Artur Akshelyan, Giovanni Bertelli, Maël Bailly, Federico Gardella, Fabio Cifariello Ciardi, Gabriele Manca, Francesco Ciurlo, as well as works of 10 selected composers of the International Workshop for Young Composers, that will take place in Bobbio in the month of July.
